The Memory Functions in Chronic Schizophrenic Patients with Tardive Dyskinesia

Abstract

|
Memory functioning was compared in 19 chronic schizophrenic patients with (N=10) and without (N=9) tardive dyskinesia (TD). The presence of TD was ascertained using Abnormal lnvoluntary Movement Scale (AlMS). The Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS) was
applied
to investigate memory function. And the overall clinical state was assessed using Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). The results revealed that there was no significant difference in memory function between TD patient group and non-TD
patient
group. The TD symptoms did not correlate significalntly with WMS scores. In addition, the relationships between TD symptom and memory function was notaffected by the location of symptom and diagnosis of TD. These results are not consistent with
previous
reports that patients with TD demonstrate impaired memory functioning and suggest the possibility that patients with TD do not bave more abnormalities in medial temporal lobe memory system compared with patients without TD.
